Meet your Hosts

Owner- Colleen “Byrne” Henderson with Chris and Penny Byrne

Running a B&B is hard work, but the rewards-meeting fascinating people and making memories with old and new friends and family-make it all worthwhile.

Since I bought the home in July of 2015, I have seen this home transform into my dream – having a place to share with family and friends. I was born and raised in Shullsburg by the late Robert, and Florence “Graham” Byrne, who celebrated her 90th birthday in 2017. I had 9 siblings, 7 brothers and 2 sisters. I lost a brother “Terry” in 2008 to a battle with cancer. The remaining siblings all live in the Wisconsin/Iowa area. They, their spouses and children have all helped transform a worn old house into a very special get-away home.

I moved from Shullsburg in 1992 to attend school in Madison, WI. I Spent six years in Madison before spending a year in Grand Rapids, MI. Due to work, I relocated to Saint Louis, MO. where I have held positions with Earthgrains, Sara Lee, Energizer Battery and, currently, Edgewell Personal Care. In 2000, I met my soulmate in St. Charles, MO. – Dr. David M. Henderson, educator and professor. We spent 14 wonderful years together, traveling, enjoying great music, quiet time and family time. Dave’s presence is brought to the home though a wonderfully furnished library of his favorite readings.

Throughout my (our) vast amount of traveling I found likes and dislikes about my stays in local Hotels, B&Bs and Inns. I have brought all the likes into this home so that each guest has a comfortable, enjoyable stay. Many of the pictures, furnishings and art come from our travels. I look forward to adding new pieces.

I am an advocate for shopping locally. Updates to the home and grounds have utilized local entrepreneurs. Many furnishings have been purchased at area shops. The food served is purchased from local grocery stores, meat markets and cheese stores. I look forward to guiding you to the local establishments.

I hope you enjoy my home as much I do! It is truly a place to get away, relax, enjoy a great glass of wine and great conversations, or quiet time.
See you soon!
